“Can’t have him throwing his arms up” - Andros Townsend unhappy with Liverpool man's antics in Euro 2024 clash
Andros Townsend recently shared his disappointment in Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai's antics in Hungary's UEFA Euro 2024 clash against Switzerland. The winger, who's currently commentating for ITV, said that Szoboszlai needs to be more positive on the field.
Hungary lost 3-1 against Switzerland in their opening game of Euro 2024 on Saturday, June 15. During the game, their skipper, Szoboszlai, was seen getting frustrated and throwing his hands around at times.
On commentary, Townsend said in the 56th minute (via HITC):
"No, when you have got a player like Szoboszlai, he is your talisman, he is your captain, he is your leader, he is your best player. You need his energy. You feed off his energy. You need him to be positive.
“You can’t have him throwing his arms up, walking around the pitch with a face on him.”
Szoboszlai played the entire 90 minutes for Hungary and provided the assist for their solitary goal, scored by Barnabas Varga (66'). However, goals from Kwadwo Duah (12'), Michel Aebischer (45'), and Breel Embolo (90+3') secured the win for Switzerland.
Szoboszlai, meanwhile, had an inconsistent 2023-24 season with Liverpool, having arrived for £60 million from RB Leipzig last summer. He started well but dropped off later on, registering seven goals and four assists in 45 games across competitions.
For Hungary, he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 43 games so far.
AC Milan in talks with Liverpool targets: Reports
As per Corriere dello Sport, AC Milan are in talks with Mats Wieffer, who has also garnered interest from Liverpool.
Wieffer has impressed during his time at Feyenoord since arriving from Excelsior in the summer of 2022. He has made 79 appearances for the Dutch giants, scoring nine goals and providing 11 assists. His contract expires in 2027 and as per journalist Matteo Moretto, the defensive midfielder would be available for around €20–25 million.
The Reds are interested in reuniting the defensive midfielder with Arne Slot, who has taken charge at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp's departure. Liverpool parted ways with Fabinho last summer and replaced him with Wataru Endo. They are still looking to strengthen the defensive midfield area.
However, AC Milan are already in talks with Wieffer for a potential move this summer. With the 24-year-old not competing at Euro 2024, the Italian giants hope to find an agreement on personal terms soon.
