Canada star gets racially abused by Lionel Messi fans following a tackle in Copa America opener; FA release statement
Canada's defender Moise Bombito was racially abused by fans of Lionel Messi on social media for tackling the Argentine legend during their Copa America clash on Thursday (June 20). The Canadian FA has come out to condemn the messages and will take the issue up with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.
The people involved have not been identified or confronted by the authorities at the time of writing. Bombito, for his part, did his job as a defender and tried his best to avoid conceding a goal in a competitive match by bringing down one of the best players in the world. The 24-year-old won three out of three tackles and four out of seven duels.
Lionel Messi will hopefully be disappointed in the behavior of his fans and will hope all those guilty can be punished not just for the sake of his brand, but for decency's sake. Argentina went on to win the Copa America opener against Canada 2-0.
