Chelsea’s latest stance on Enzo Fernandez emerges as he returns to squad after racism row on international duty

Chelsea will reportedly not be taking any action against Enzo Fernandez after the Argentine held discussions with his teammates. The midfielder is set to donate an undisclosed amount to an anti-discrimination charity, which will be matched by the club.

As per a report by BBC, Enzo landed in Atlanta to team up with the squad ahead of their pre-season friendly against Club America. The Argentine had previously apologized for his racist chant along with the national teammates, after they won Copa America.

BBC journalist Nizaar Kinsella posted on Xabout the issue, writing:

"Enzo Fernandez has held talks with several French players in Chelsea's squad and apologised in person after being accused of 'uninhibited racism' by teammate Wesley Fofana. The Argentina international, 23, landed in Atlanta in the United States and addressed the video posted to his social media account, which is alleged to have included 'racist and discriminatory' chants by the French Football Federation."

He added:

"The song calls into question the heritage of France's black and mixed race players, with Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto and Fofana all part of the travelling group on Chelsea US tour. At least one player involved is understood to have appreciated the initial talks as manager Enzo Maresca is expected to confirm the return of his midfielder, who cost £107million from Benfica in 2023, in a press conference today. Fernandez has also offered to donate money to an anti-discrimination charity, which will be matched by Chelsea through the club's foundation, and the club have been impressed with their midfielder's behaviour since he returned and agreed to match the contribution. The matter is now internally considered closed."

Reece James and Axel Disasi were reportedly key in the talks between Fernandez and their French teammates.

Chelsea's pre-season tour off to a poor star

Chelsea have played two matches in pre-season so far but are yet to win one. They started with a draw against Wrexham and then were beaten 4-1 by Celtic.

They take on Club America later this week before taking on Manchester City. They will face Real Madrid and Inter Milan in their final two pre-season games this summer.

Enzo Maresca will have a tough start to his Premier League career as a manager. He will be up against Manchester City on the first weekend at Stamford Bridge.
