Chelsea star Cucurella shares feelings on Erling Haaland calling him ‘funny man’ after pushing him over before scoring following chant controversy
Marc Cucurella has shed light on his encounter with Erling Haaland during Chelsea's 2-0 loss to Manchester City earlier this season (August 18). The pair came up against one another shortly after the Spaniard had used the Norweigan in a song to celebrate winning Euro 2024.
Cucurella was part of Spain's side that triumphed in Germany and won the European Championships. He played an essential role as La Roja's left-back and earned plaudits.
However, the Chelsea defender riled up a fair few fans with a song after that victory. This included lyrics 'Haaland trembles', which made the west Londoners' season opener against Manchester City much more intriguing.
Cucurella was left floored by Erling Haaland in that game, who went on the score. The City striker had called him a funny man in response to the song. The left-back touched on this while speaking to The Guardian:
"That was the first game of the season too! It was like the Premier League did it deliberately. It was fun. That’s football. In the end it’s a laugh. That’s how we have to approach life. Do we take football too seriously? A bit, yeah. Look, I know it’s something people are invested in. But in the end, it’s a sport."
Cucurella's song went viral, and fans anticipated Haaland would dislike it because the suggestion of the full-back leaves him trembling. That wasn't the case for the Premier League top scorer, who eased him off the ball before netting at Stamford Bridge.
Erling Haaland has made a red-hot start to the season, with 11 goals in 10 games across competitions, including his strike against Chelsea. His power and movement have left opposition defenders trembling.
Erling Haaland's father Alfie shared Cucurella's view on the Chelsea star's song
Erling Haaland's father Alfie, formerly of City, also highlighted how Cucurella's song was a bit of fun. The Norweigan insisted there was no bad blood between his son and the Spain international:
"I think that's a little bit of fun you know, we think he's a good player and he's a funny person that Cucurella, so it's just a little bit of banter. I think Erling likes it."
It seems that Cucurella's song went down well with the Haaland family, but that wasn't the case for England fans. The Three Lions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, and the Chelsea full-back assisted in that game.
City fans were seen mocking Cucurella after he was subbed off at Stamford Bridge. Following the European Championships, he's become quite the character in English football.
