Chelsea star Reece James eyeing up possible move to European rivals for health reasons - Reports

Reece James is planning to leave Chelsea to address his injury woes, according to Football Transfers. The English right-back has reached out to Barcelona and Benfica as he aims to move to warmer climates to help improve his fitness.

James rose through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and broke into the first team in the 2019-20 campaign. He showed great promise and has since transformed into one of the best right-backs in Europe with the Blues.

Unfortunately, the player has suffered from injury issues throughout his stint with the London giants. The 24-year-old has missed 129 games for Chelsea so far in his career and is yet to feature this season.

James has suffered seven hamstring injuries since earning promotion to the senior side. He has also been plagued with muscle-related problems, including knee issues.

Last season, the player appeared just 11 times across competitions for Chelsea as he dealt with a hamstring injury that required surgery. The Blues have been patient with the Englishman, even handing him the armband last year following Cesar Azpilicueta's exit.

Although Chelsea are confident James can get back to his best, the player has been advised by physios to ply his trade in warmer climates of southern Europe. It is believed that a change in weather could help improve his long-term fitness and aid in his recovery.

As such, James' camp has sounded out clubs in Spain and Portugal, particularly Barcelona and Benfica, to understand the feasibility of a move.

Chelsea have managed well in Reece James' absence, but there's no doubt his return could improve the team. Malo Gusto has covered admirably in the position, but Enzo Maresca will be desperate to James back.

The Englishman is a lifelong Blues fan and was always keen to wear the armband at Stamford Bridge. He is living his dream with the London giants, but the need to improve his fitness could surpass his love for the club.

James is expected to return to full training next week, but his return to action with Chelsea may take a little more time. Meanwhile, Barcelona require a new right-back despite Jules Kounde's impeccable form in the role.

The Frenchman is playing out of position, and James' arrival could help him return to his preferred central role. However, the Englishman is under contract with the Blues until 2028, and the Catalan giants' poor finances could make it difficult to complete a deal. Barcelona will also be wary of James' poor fitness record.
