Chelsea Transfer News Roundup: Blues eyeing Evan Ferguson; club sign Argentinean ace, and more - August 9, 2024
Chelsea have been heavily involved in the transfer market this summer following an underwhelming campaign. New manager Enzo Maresca has made multiple changes to his squad so far.
Meanwhile, the Blues are interested in Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson. Elsewhere, the London giants have secured the services of Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino.
On that note, here's a look at the key Chelsea transfer stories as on August 9, 2024:
Chelsea eyeing Evan Ferguson
Chelsea are considering a move for Evan Ferguson this summer, according to club insider Simon Phillips. The Blues remain in the market for a new striker this year despite reportedly agreeing a deal to sign Samu Omorodion.
Maresca is working to assemble a squad fit to get the club back to their glory days, and Ferguson is a long-term target. The 19-year-old wasn't in his element last season, registering just six goals and one assist in 36 games across competitions for Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, Ferguson's stock remains high, and the London giants have internally discussed a move for the player. The Englishman is among a host of namee being considered by the club. Ferguson is under contract at the Amex until 2029, so prising him away could be a costly affair.
Blues sign Aaron Anselmino
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of talented Argentinean defender Aaron Anselmino this summer. The highly rated player recently caught the eye with Boca Juniors, prompting the Stamford Bridge hierarchy to move quickly for his services.
The 19-year-old has signed a seven-year deal with the Blues but will spend the upcoming season on loan with the Argentinian side. Anselmino has appeared nine times for the Boca Juniors first team and will continue his development there.
The London giants bid adieu to Thiago Silva this summer, with the Brazilian leaving at the end of his contract. Maresca has already added Tosin Adarabioyo to his roster. However, the Blues are also laying down plans for the future, and a move for Anselmino is likely to pay dividends in time.
Samu Omorodion set for medicals, says Fabrizio Romano
Samu Omorodion is gearing up for his medical with Chelsea, according to acclaimed transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The Spanish striker is on his way to Stamford Bridge this summer from Atletico Madrid in a reported £35.4 million deal.
The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Alaves, registering nine goals and one assist in 36 games across competitions. The Blues have apparently identified Omorodion as the ideal candidate to compete with Nicolas Jackson for a place in the starting XI.
In his column for Caught Offside, Romano added that Los Rojiblancos decided to let the Spaniard leave after securing Julian Alvarez from Manchester City.
"Samu Omorodion is now set to leave Atletico to sign for Chelsea. Omorodion will become a new Chelsea player – the verbal agreement is done and we’re just waiting for the formal steps," wrote Romano.
He continued:
"Atletico Madrid will receive £35.4m, and although earlier in the summer they rejected a bid for Omorodion and wanted to keep the player, their stance changed when they saw the opportunity to sign a fantastic striker like Julian Alvarez.
"As for Omorodion’s medical, for now, he is at the Olympics, so everything is being planned taking into consideration that he has an Olympic final to play."
Romano added that the London giants could offload new signing Marc Guehi on loan this summer.
“In terms of how this deal impacts other strikers, there is no news on Victor Osimhen yet, while on Marc Guiu we can confirm that a loan move is a possibility being assessed internally – Enzo Maresca will also have a say on this,” wrote Romano.
Guehi joined Chelsea from Barcelona this summer.
