Chris Sutton predicts winner as Germany and Denmark face each other in Euro 2024 round of 16
Football pundit Chris Sutton has backed Germany to ease past Denmark in their upcoming EURO 2024 Round-of-16 clash. The pundit backed the tournament hosts to score twice in the game while keeping a clean sheet to progress to the quarterfinals.
In his BBC prediction column, Sutton stated Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann was unlikely to make a change apart from removing Jonathan Tah for Nico Schlotterbeck because of a suspension. He claimed that the biggest threat to the home side would be Christian Eriksen and wrote:
"I am covering this game with Vicki Sparks for Radio 5 live and I'm looking forward to seeing what Germany do next. They started the tournament like a train against Scotland and played well again against Hungary but then found it more difficult against Switzerland. They fought back well to get a draw, though, and I am a big fan of Niclas Fullkrug who came on to score their goal."
He added:
"Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann named the same starting XI for each of those three group games but he will have to make at least one change here because Jonathan Tah is suspended after picking up two bookings. We saw against England that Denmark are stubborn and well organised, and their wing-backs play an important role in the way they are set up.
"They also have Christian Eriksen who can make things tick when they get on the ball. I am still backing the hosts to get through this one, though, because they have got enough attacking firepower to get past the Danes' defence."
Germany managed to qualify for the knockout stages without losing any of their EURO 2024 group-stage matches. They defeated Scotland and Hungary before a last-gasp goal got them a point against Switzerland.
Germany have a tough route to EURO 2024 final
Germany will face fellow tournament favorites in the upcoming knockout rounds should they get past Denmark in the Round of 16. They will face the winner of Spain vs Georgia in the quarterfinals, with the 2008 winners favorites to ease past the tournament debutants.
Should Germany beat Spain or Georgia in the quarterfinals, they will have to take on France, Belgium, Portugal, or Slovenia in the semifinal. France and Portugal are poised to meet in EURO 2024 quarterfinals, with the winner possibly taking on Germany or Spain, if they win their respective Round of 16 clashes, in the semi.
Germany have not won the European competition since 1996 and are looking to win the tournament at home this summer. Their last major trophy was the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
