Cristiano Ronaldo breaks record he previously held with ex-Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos after Portugal's win over Poland
Cristiano Ronaldo produced a sublime performance and created a new record during Portugal’s 5-1 win over Poland in the UEFA Nations League on Friday (November 15). The Portuguese legend is now the player with the most wins in international football (132).
Ronaldo contributed two goals and an assist as Portugal overwhelmed Poland to secure a Nations League quarter-final ticket. Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto, and Bruno Fernandes were also on the scoresheet for A Selecao.
Playing in his 215th game for Portugal, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored his 134th and 135th international goals, taking his career total to 910. The win over Poland also meant that Ronaldo has now won 132 matches with the Portugal national team, making him the player with the most wins in men's international football.
The previous record holder was Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos. The Spanish defender was involved in 131 victories across international competitions during his career with Spain’s national team. Third on the list is another former Los Blancos star — Iker Casillas — with 121 victories for La Roja.
Despite nearing 40, Ronaldo has shown no signs of slowing down. He continues to set new records for club and country with his astonishing goalscoring prowess. The Portuguese superstar has also been in fine form at club level, registering 10 goals and three assists in 15 outings for Al-Nassr this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo is joint-top goalscorer in the UEFA Nations League
Cristiano Ronaldo is the joint-top goalscorer in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League. The 39-year-old has scored five times in five games for Portugal in the competition. His tally is only matched by Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko.
The Portugal skipper opened his account in the first group game against Croatia on September 5. He scored the winner in the 2-1 win over the Croats to reach a historic 900 career goals landmark. In the following match against Scotland on September 8, Ronaldo came off the bench to score again in a 2-1 win.
On October 12, he scored his third consecutive Nations League goal during Portugal’s 3-1 away victory against Poland. The Al-Nassr star did not score in the return match against Scotland before netting his most recent brace against Poland.
Cristiano Ronaldo will now look to lead Portugal into the knockout phase of the competition and add to his goal tally. They will round up their group-stage fixtures with a dead rubber clash with Croatia on Monday (November 18).
