Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe fail to score in normal time as Euro 2024 quarter-final between Portugal and France goes to extra-time
Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe failed to score in the normal time of the Euro 2024 quarter-final clash between Portugal and France on July 5. Both teams are not desperately looking to find the net in extra time following a 0-0 result at the end of 90 minutes.
Kylian Mbappe scored his first and only goal in the Euro 2024 against Poland in the group stage via a penalty. Meanwhile, Ronaldo has failed to find the net despite being the starter in four matches for Portugal. He missed a decisive penalty in their Round of 16 clash against Slovenia, but the Selecao won 3-0 in penalties.
The Portugal vs France game has been underwhelming during normal time. Fans from both sides had high expectations from a game that sees Kylian Mbappe facing his longtime idol Cristiano Ronaldo. However, both teams have failed to find the magic in the game.
The winner of the Euro 2024 clash between France vs Portugal will face Spain in the semi-final of the tournament. La Roja won 2-1 over host nation Germany earlier this evening.
Kylian Mbappe hoped Cristiano Ronaldo will not be happy after France vs Portugal game in Euro 2024
In a pre-match press conference ahead of the Euro 2024 clash between Portugal and France, Kylian Mbappe spoke very highly of Cristiano Ronaldo. He, however, hoped that the veteran would not happy after the quarter-final match.
“He has inspired generations, scored countless goals, and won a vast number of titles. I have great respect for him, but I hope he won't be too happy tomorrow because we will have advanced to the semifinals," Mbappe said to journalist Fabrice Hawkins. (via BeIN Sports)
However, despite facing him as an opponent, Mbappe didn't hesitate to call him a legend irrespective of the results of the clash between France and Portugal.
“Everyone knows the admiation I have always had for Cristiano. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with him many times. We are in contact, and he always tries to give me good advice. It's an honor. No matter what happens, he will remain a football legend. But I hope we advance tomorrow," the Real Madrid star added.
Mbappe has been vocal about his love for Ronaldo for a long time. The Frenchman grew up idolizing him. He also shared an image with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner when he announced his recent transfer to Real Madrid in June.
