Cristiano Ronaldo sends message on social media ahead of Portugal's UEFA Nations League clash with Poland
Ahead of his team's UEFA Nations League home game with Poland on Saturday (November 15), Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has posted a message on X. A. Selecao are unbeaten in four games in the competition, winning thrice.
Roberto Martinez's side are coming off a goalless draw at Scotland last month. The stalemate ended Portugal's perfect three-game winning start to their campaign, with their 39-year-old captain scoring in all three games.
Having scored in the 3-1 win at Poland on matchday three, Ronaldo will look to return to the scoresheet and also bring his team back to winning ways. Ahead of the clash with the Poles at the Estadio do Dragao in Lisbon at the weekend, Ronaldo tweeted (as translated from Portuguese):
"Focused on victory"
The five-time winner scored in his team's Nations League opener - a 2-1 home win over Croatia in September. It marked his 900th career goal for club and country, becoming the first player in the game's history to scale the landmark.
Ronaldo also scored in the subsequent 2-1 home wn over Scotland and the aforementioned 3-1 win at Poland before the Selecao's winning juggernaut was snapped by Scotland.
It's pertinent to note that Ronaldo and Co. are the inaugural winners of the Nations League, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final.
"It's about living in the moment" - Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo on scoring 1000 goals
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that he might not have the time to reach 1000 career goals. The 39-year-old had told his former United teammate Rio Ferdinand about scaling the landmark but sounds less optimistic now.
Already the most prolific goalscorer in men's international football, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said (as per ESPN) that he's now focused on short-term goals instead:
"I now face my life living in the moment. I can't think long term anymore. I can no longer think about what I said publicly that I wanted to reach 1,000 goals. But it seems that everything is easy now, just last month I reached 900.
"It's about living in the moment, enjoying the moment, seeing the response that my legs will give me in the next few years. One thousand goals is great, but if it doesn't come, I'm already the player in history with the most goals."
Ronaldo will turn 40 in February, but it's not clear if the Portugal captain will play the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
