Dani Carvajal provides hilarious response when asked to choose between Kylian Mbappe and Nico Williams before the Euro 2024 final
Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal provided a hilarious response when asked who he'd pick between Kylian Mbappe and Nico Williams before the Euro 2024 final. The Spain right-back is gearing up for Sunday's (July 14) showdown against England, after which he will return to join his club side.
For now, Carvajal will be sharing the pitch with his La Roja teammate Williams for another match. Overall, the pair have played 13 matches together for Spain without bagging a joint goal contribution.
This is largely because both players operate on opposite flanks for Spain. When asked if he'd pick Williams over Mbappe, Carvajal said (via @MadridXtra):
"Nico Williams or Mbappe? Well, whoever is on my team. Nico on Sunday. Mbappe after (laughs)."
The 32-year-old provided a rather cheeky answer that wouldn't hurt his relations with either player. Carvajal will be teaming up with the France superstar for the 2024-25 season at Real Madrid.
Mbappe only decided to join Los Blancos from Paris Saint-Germain this summer after his contract ran out at the Parc des Princes. He's considered among the best footballers in the world today, having registered 256 goals and 108 assists in 308 appearances across competitions for PSG.
Mbappe didn't enjoy the best of times at Euro 2024, bagging just one goal from the penalty spot in five matches, in addition to providing two assists. France were knocked out by Carvajal's Spain in the semi-finals after suffering a 2-1 defeat.
Kylian Mbappe reacts to France's exit from Euro 2024
Kylian Mbappe and his France squad endured a rather poor Euro 2024 campaign, where they were knocked out in the semi-final. They were also heavily criticized for their uninspiring style of football, which lacked attacking intent.
Throughout the competition, Les Bleus only scored four goals, with just one coming from open play. Speaking after his team's exit from Euro 2024, Mbappe said (via ESPN):
"My competition? It was a failure. We had the ambition to be European champions; I had the ambition to be European champion. We aren't, so that's a failure."
"It's football, we have to move on. It's been a long year. I'm going to go on holiday and get some rest- that'll do me a lot of good, and I'll try to come back strongly," he added.
France have now suffered disappointing ends in two major international competitions. They lost the 2022 FIFA World Cup final on penalties to Argentina (4-2) after a 3-3 draw.
