Darwin Nunez gives humble 3-word response crediting Liverpool teammate after scoring against RB Leipzig
Liverpool continued their strong start to the campaign with a 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig in their Champions League clash on Wednesday, October 23. Darwin Nunez scored the decisive goal but was quick to credit his teammate, Mohamed Salah, for the setup.
The Reds entered the match, having won seven of their first eight Premier League fixtures and both of their Champions League games. Although Leipzig posed problems to their defense, the Merseyside giants side looked sharp in attack from the opening whistle.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 27th minute when Nunez found himself in the right place at the right time to score the opening goal. The build-up play was particularly notable, as Kostas Tsimikas delivered a precise cross to an unmarked Salah at the far post. Salah then directed a header that seemed destined for the net, but Nunez ensured the goal with a simple tap-in.
During the celebrations, Liverpool’s number nine was seen telling Virgil van Dijk that the credit for the goal belonged to Salah.
"No it’s Mo," Nunez said.
However, Van Dijk was certainly not interested in discussing who deserves the goal, and tapped Nunez on the chest as if to dismiss the suggestion.
"We need more," Van Dijk said. (via Daily Mail)
The Reds currently sit second in the Champions League table after three matches. They will aim to maintain their good form, but a tough challenge lies ahead, as they are set to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, October 27.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praises Darwin Nunez’s performance
Darwin Nunez has not had the best start to the season in front of goal, but after a slow beginning, he is gradually emerging as a key player for Liverpool. The game against Leipzig presented an opportunity, and it’s fair to say he seized it.
When asked about Nunez’s form, Slot praised the Uruguayan, noting that his hold-up play and ability to draw defenders with him were instrumental in helping Liverpool create chances.
What I liked from Darwin was that he was also strong, comfortable on the ball, kept the ball a lot, fighting if he had to defend, so he made it a really difficult game for the two centre-backs of Leipzig. And then for him scoring, I think that is always nice for a striker to be on the scoresheet," he said. (via Liverpool official website)
The real test for Liverpool begins now, as they face a challenging series of fixtures both in Europe and domestically.
After their match against Arsenal, the Reds will take on Brighton & Hove Albion twice - first in the Carabao Cup and then in the Premier League. This will be followed by a crucial showdown against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on November 5.
