Drake loses £537,000 after placing bets on Barcelona and Arsenal
Canadian rapper Drake lost £537,000 after placing bets on Barcelona and Arsenal for their respective league games on Sunday.
Barcelona carried Drake's record label OVO on their jersey to celebrate the rapper's record of hitting 50 billion streams on Spotify. However, the Spanish giants fell victim to the 'Drake curse', registering their first defeat of the season.
Drake would’ve wonn a whopping CA$3,900,002 or £2.5million had Barcelona and Arsenal both registered a win in their respective matches.
Xavi's Barcelona were thrashed by their arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-1 in their much anticipated match at the Santiago Bernabeau on Sunday. Meanwhile, Arsenal managed to secure a narrow 1-0 win over Leeds United, thanks to Bukayo Saka's goal in the first half.
The Blaugrana fell to second position in the table after their defeat on Sunday while the Gunners cemented their position at the top of the EPL table. Defending Premier League champions Manchester City also suffered a defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, making them fall four points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.
Barca's defeat after the rapper's bet made the Spanish giants the latest victim of the curse. In the past, Manchester City lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2019 after their striker Sergio Aguero met Drake before the match. British professional boxer Anthony Joshua is also a victim of the infamous curse, having suffered a shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr after taking a picture with the Canadian rapper.
Football fans react as 'Drake curse' hits Barcelona to inflict their first defeat of the season
Barcelona have become the latest victim of the infamous 'Drake curse' as they lost to Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season after the rapper picked the Catalan club on a betting site.
While Barcelona fans were furious after losing the game against Real Madrid, neutral football fans reacted with mixed emotions to the consistency of the infamous 'Drake curse'. The rapper's second bet turned out to be a winning one as Arsenal defeated hosts Leeds United in the Premier League.
Some football followers pinned the blame for the defeat entirely on Barcelona's squad, adding that Drake had nothing to do with their performance at the Santiago Bernabeau.
Going against the tide were Arsenal fans who claimed that the Gunners broke the 'Drake curse' as they won against Leeds United despite the rapper's bet in their favor.
