"Dropped an absolute all-time stinker", "Looked like a lost boy" - Fans unimpressed by England star's performance despite 1-0 win

Despite England bagging a 1-0 win against Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener, fans were left disappointed by Phil Foden's performance. The match was held at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on Sunday, June 16.

The Three Lions scored their first and only goal of the match through 20-year-old midfielder Jude Bellingham's stunning header in the 13th minute. England maintained better ball possession (54%) and pass accuracy (89%), while Serbia, who only had one shot on target, fed on scraps.

Fans took to social media and expressed their opinions on Phil Foden's performance. While some fans compared his gameplay for England to that for Manchester City, others questioned head coach Gareth Southgate's decisions with the starting line-up.

Here are some reactions on X:

One fan wrote:

"#sereng Yes Foden looked like a lost boy out there. #BBCFootball"

Another added:

"Oh I thought you were slandering Saka You're backing him. Foden has dropped an absolute all-time stinker But they'll get onto Saka when we lose"
"Foden had an absolute stinker, tbh.,"chimed in another fan.

One account posted:

"Foden playing 94 minutes whilst a way more deserving player rots on the bench. Terrible decisions by Southgate"

Another said:

"How did Foden stay on the pitch? LHS was dead."

One user wrote:

"Full Time Opinion: The fact that Foden played the whole game tells you a lot about Southgate managerial acumen. England basically played with 10 men because I saw no contribution worth mentioning from Foden all game long. #SRBENG #EURO2024"

While another wrote:

"Foden in an England shirt is just a completely different player"

England will face Denmark next in Euro 2024 on Thursday, June 20, at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany.

"Great start for me personally" - Matchwinner Jude Bellingham opens up after win against Serbia in Euro 2024

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham spoke to the media after England's win against Serbia in Euro 2024 as the 20-year-old netted the winning goal. Speaking after the Three Lions' 1-0 victory in their opening match of the championship, Bellingham told BBC Sport:

“Good game. I thought they are a very tough side. Very robust, strong and a big group of lads and it was important that we prepared well. The staff got it right. We prepared all week very well. We knew the roles we had to do. We try to keep to our own standards and try to do our own job. It’s important that we got off to a good start. Positive inside the camp and onto the next one."

He added:

"I have got used to getting into the box, getting wide and trying to do that. I got into that habit at Madrid and I wanted to carry my form into the Euros. It’s a great start for me personally to get my confidence up and to help the lads get the win is the most important thing."

Jude Bellingham made his senior debut for England in November 2020 and ended up as runner-up in the 2020 UEFA European Championship.
