England legend Wayne Rooney responds when asked if Harry Kane will win Golden Boot at Euro 2024
Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney hopes that Harry Kane can win the Golden Boot at Euro 2024. Early signs from the Bayern Munich striker weren't too promising as he barely got a sniff at goal in his team's 1-0 win over Serbia on Sunday (June 16). The game's only goal was scored by Jude Bellingham in the 13th minute.
However, the former Tottenham Hotspur number nine is coming into this competition on the back of an incredible goalscoring season with Bayern Munich. In his first campaign at the Allianz Arena, Kane played 45 matches across competitions, bagging 44 goals and 12 assists.
Moreover, he's got the creative spark of Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden either side of him for England. Claiming that Kane should be among the favorites to win this honor, Rooney told The Overlap:
"I hope so, he's got a chance."
After a disappointing start to Euro 2024, Kane will be fancying his chances of scoring at least one in his team's next match against Denmark on Thursday (June 20). The Danes were underwhelming in their first match of the tournament and allowed Slovenia 11 shots in a 1-1 result.
Kane will also be on penalties for The Three Lions, and with England expected to go deep into the competition, he will have chances to score. To date, he's made 92 appearances across competitions for his nation, bagging 63 goals in the process.
Pundit calls for early substitution as Harry Kane fails to fire for England in first Euro 2024 match
Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes Harry Kane needed to be subbed off in England's first match of Euro 2024 against Serbia. The 30-year-old ended up playing the entire 90 despite an underwhelming performance.
Gareth Southgate had the likes of Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney on the bench, who have proved their worth in front of goal in the Premier League. Calling for Kane's substitution in such games, Agbonlahor told talkSPORT (via GOAL):
"Kane - can he not be subbed? It was crying out for someone to run in behind, Watkins or Toney, but especially Watkins with his pace. Get him on the field.
"Harry Kane not 100 per cent fit, doesn't have to play every minute of every game. He has to make these changes earlier on."
Kane suffered from a back issue before the start of Euro 2024 and his fitness has been a worry in the last couple of weeks. Meanwhile, Watkins had an incredible league season with Aston Villa, scoring 19 goals in the English top-flight.
