Enzo Maresca provides worrying Wesley Fofana injury update after Chelsea win over Villa
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Wesley Fofana has picked up a hamstring injury during their game against Aston Villa on Sunday, December 1. He has revealed that the defender could miss up to five weeks – miss the entire festive period.
Speaking to the media after the match, Maresca claimed that it was a big loss for his side as they were losing a key player. However, the manager is confident that his substitutes will step up and deliver.
He said via Football London:
"Unfortunately it is bad news. A hamstring problem. These kind of things usually require three, four, five weeks. In this moment, we lose him for 10 or 12 games. In the way he was playing, it's a big loss for us but we have more players and we can find a solution."
However, the Chelsea manager added that he will miss Fofana and added that it is a huge loss for the club. He said:
"It's a big loss, it's a big loss. He is doing fantastic but it is normal when you play this amount of games. Fortunately it was his first injury of the season but we will find a solution."
Chelsea managed to win 3-0 despite the injury to Fofana. Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez found the back of the net before the Frenchman left the pitch, while Cole Palmer sealed the win late in the second half.
Chelsea doing well but Enzo Maresca is keeping calm
Enzo Maresca has admitted that he was happy with the performance but is not getting carried away. The Chelsea manager added that he was not sure if they have taken a step forward in their development.
He said:
"To be honest, I do not know. I said after the Leicester game; no matter who the other team is, it is important to try and play in the way we want to on and off the ball. When we do this and we get three points, we are for sure happy. I think the performance was very good and the way we prepared the game. They are a very difficult team, they are top defensively. It's not easy to find space. They don't press so you have to be patience. We were very aggressive. Nicolas Jackson scored a goal but what he was doing off the ball is what we need."
Chelsea are third in the Premier League table, level on points with second placed Arsenal in every stat in the table. However, they sit a spot below because of the alphabetical order.
