Scotland have been knocked out of Euro 2024 after Kevin Csoboth scored a winner for Hungary in the 10th minute of additional time in the second half. The final Group A clash ended in a defeat for the Scots.

They lost 5-1 against Germany in the tournament opener but managed a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. The defeat against Hungary sealed Steve Clarke's team's exit from the continental competition in Germany.

The hosts proceeded as the Group A winners with seven points from their three games, while Switzerland finished second with five points on the board. Hungary scored three points, courtesy of their win against Scotland.

Scott McTominay and Co. managed only one point, through their draw against Switzerland. They were eliminated via a late goal from Csoboth.

Steve Clarke fumes at referee after Scotland's Euro 2024 elimination

Scotland had a massive penalty shout when Stuart Armstrong was brought down inside the area due to a clumsy tackle from Willi Orban. Referee Facundo Tello, however, didn't give a spot kick.

Scotland coach Steve Clarke fumed at the decision, claiming only European referees should officiate at Euro 2024. He raged at Argentine referee Tello, telling the media after the Hungary defeat (via Mirror):

"One hundred percent a penalty. Somebody somewhere has to explain to me why that's not a penalty. It is 100 percent. It's a one-goal game and if we get the penalty it could be a different night. I've got other words but I won't use them."

He added:

"It's a European competition so it may have been better to have a European referee. But we had a European VAR and maybe the referee didn't see the challenge clearly on the pitch."

Clarke further questioned the purpose of having VAR if the technology couldn't make the right calls at crucial moments. Nevertheless, in an all too familiar story for Scotland, they failed to proceed onward from the group stages at Euro 2024.
