“Everyone looks to him” - Marcus Rashford told what he must do under Ruben Amorim by Manchester United icon
Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has urged Marcus Rashford to make the most of Ruben Amorim's arrival to turn around his career. He believes the Englishman should set the right example in the dressing room and be a leader.
Rashford came through Manchester United's academy and was seen as one of the most promising players in the country in his younger days. However, since the start of the last season, his form has dipped massively. He scored just eight goals and provided six assists in 43 games across competitions last season.
Rashford has faced immense criticism from fans and pundits alike and he's now 26 and is expected to be a senior player. The Red Devils, meanwhile, have now appointed Ruben Amorim as their manager and Teddy Sheringham believes Rashford needs to make the most of this change. He said (via Daily Star):
"I'm looking at these United players, and they might not know it or think it, but they need to be led. Marcus Rashford needs to look at a manager and think, 'I like the way he's talking; I like his vibe, I understand exactly what he wants, and we need to go out and do it. I'm going to lead from the front.’
"Younger players would then look at Rashford and think, 'if you're going to show me how it's done, I'm following you as well. Come on, let's all go together.’ Rashford is your main example because everyone looks to him. He's the one that's going to score your goals, going to make goals, and he's the one that people look at and go, 'he ain't at it, is he?'
Sheringham continued to stress the need for Rashford to start leading from the front at Manchester United, saying:
"So, he needs to get him on board and get him leading from the front. He's not a young lad anymore. He's an experienced player. It's funny how quickly you change from a young lad to an experienced ever-present player.
"All of a sudden, you're experienced, you look around the changing room and you're expected to lead. He's played for England many times and he should be leading from the front, and he's not doing that at Manchester United. That needs to change. He's got to get the top players on his side very, very quickly.”
Rashford has registered four goals and three assists in 18 games across competitions this season.
Marcus Rashford and Manchester United hoping for a big change under Ruben Amorim
Marcus Rashford has failed to provide a goal contribution for Manchester United in his last six appearances across competitions. He has scored just one goal in his last 12 appearances for the club. Hence, he will need a huge upturn in form if he is to stake a claim in Ruben Amorim's squad.
The Red Devils are expected to undergo a major shift under the Portuguese after they sacked Erik ten Hag. Amorim prefers a back-three formation with either 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 and will likely implement that at Old Trafford. With Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo also available, Rashford will have tough competition for the winger position.
Manchester United are currently 13th in the Premier League but just four points behind third-placed Chelsea. They are also 15th in the UEFA Europa League table, three points behind the top eight. They will next face Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the Premier League on November 24.
