"Everything goes very over the top in England" - Pundit calls out criticism of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate

Teddy Sheringham has claimed that the criticism of England manager Gareth Southgate is over the top after they reached Euro 2024 final. The pundit believes that the comments have been disgusting and it would be hard for his family to read them.

Speaking to OnlinePoker, Sheringham said that everything has been over the top with England fans. He is fine with criticism but thinks the comments online have not been tasteful and said:

"I can understand some of the criticism directed at Gareth Southgate, but everything goes very over the top in England. If you were in his shoes or in his family's shoes, I think you'd be quite disgusted about it to be honest – he's got us into another major final."

He added:

"I've said this before, but the Germans have been doing what England have done this tournament for years. They weren't at their best in the early stages of the competition, but they're beginning to peak towards the back end and the final.
"His record speaks for itself really, it's not the best football on the eye but it doesn't need to be fancy in big tournaments. That first half last night is one of the best performances I've seen from us in a while, so it's clear England are saving their best until last."

England have managed to make it to back-to-back finals at the European competition. However, they are arguably yet to put on a good display at EURO 2024 and the fans have been highly critical of Gareth Southgate.

Alan Shearer thinks Gareth Southgate is learning from his past mistake

Alan Shearer believes Gareth Southgate is slowly learning from his mistakes from the EURO 2020 final loss to Italy. The manager is bringing on his substitutes, especially the penalty takers earlier in the game than just for the final minutes.

He told BetFair:

"One thing Gareth Southgate was criticised for against Italy at Euro 2020 was that he brought on his penalty takers with just a couple of minutes to go, whereas he gave the likes of Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold plenty of time to get involved in the game so I think Gareth learnt from his mistakes there. It worked out perfectly but I believe there's still more to come performance-wise."

England lost the EURO 2020 to Italy after Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho missed their penalties in the shootout. The Three Lions converted all their penalties in their win over Switzerland in the quarter-finals at Euro 2024.
