Ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp becomes no. 1 target to replace national team head coach after 2026 FIFA World Cup: Reports
According to The Daily Mirror, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is the favorite to take charge of the Germany national team after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Julian Nagelsmann is currently in charge of Die Mannschaft but his contract runs until the next World Cup.
Klopp first rose to prominence with Borussia Dortmund, achieving success during his seven-season stay at Signal Iduna Park. He moved to Liverpool in 2015 and soon transformed them into world beaters.
During his time, the Reds won the league for the first time in the Premier League era. The 57-year-old also helped the Merseyside club win the Champions League, along with numerous other trophies.
However, he left this summer at the end of his contract, citing a desire to take a break from football after a tiring stint at Anfield. Liverpool have since appointed Arne Slot as his successor.
Klopp has been linked with multiple clubs but has stuck to his sabbatical plans. However, he could be tempted to take charge of his national team in 2026.
Germany could not progress from the group stages in the last two World Cups. They last won the European Championship in 1996 and were knocked out of the quarterfinals this year by eventual champions Spain. Julian Nagelsmann is now under pressure to guide them to glory in 2026.
Speaking to Aktuelle Sportstudio (via The Mirror), Germany sporting director Rudi Voller has kept the door open for Klopp.
“I don’t even know what Jurgen would like to do again. If Julian Nagelsmann were to decide at some point that he would rather coach a top club again – then of course there is no way around Jurgen Klopp. If he wants to,” Voller said.
The former Liverpool manager has also been linked with the England job of late.
Will Liverpool miss Jurgen Klopp?
Liverpool have made a blistering start to life under Arne Slot this summer. While it is true that he inherited a formidable squad, the former Feyenoord manager has taken little time to get them acquainted with his tactics.
The Reds started the season with three wins on the run, with Slot's style of play also receiving much praise. The defeat to Nottingham Forest after the international break threatened to ruin the mood at Anfield, but it turned out to be a one-off affair.
Liverpool have since secured thumping wins over AC Milan in the Champions League and Bournemouth in the Premier League. Slot's team are now second in the league after five games, a point behind leaders Manchester City.
While Jurgen Klopp will be revered as an Anfield legend, the Merseyside club may be gearing up for the Arne Slot era.
