Ex-Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen explains explains why Juventus, Bayern Munich stints failed to work out for Matthijs de Ligt

Rene Meulensteen thinks Manchester United summer signing Matthijs de Ligt struggled at Juventus and Bayern Munich because of a perception that he isn't good on the ball. The Dutch defender has been on the move three times in the last five years.

De Ligt's latest transfer saw him join the Red Devils from Bayern earlier this summer in a reported £38.5 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons deal. He spent two years at the Allianz Arena but ultimately failed to hit the heights anticipated.

Meulensteen thinks De Ligt, 25, will be a hit at Manchester United and suit Premier League football. The club's former assistant coach alluded to the Netherlands international's spell at Ajax (via TEAMTalk):

"Matthijs de Ligt can reach his potential in the Premier League, he is a player who suits the division. He is strong, powerful and it helps that Erik ten Hag knows him. De Ligt was flying at Ajax when Ten Hag was there and he was one of the best players in Holland."

De Ligt's development came under Ten Hag at Ajax and he flourished, appointed captain during his teenage years. He was heralded for his leadership qualities and composure on the ball at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

That wasn't the case at Bayern and Juve, where his performances were questioned. Meulensteen thinks the clubs shared the same concerns about the center-back:

"I think the move to Juventus didn’t quite work and his career stalled at Bayern Munich because they might not think he is good enough on the ball."

De Ligt made 73 appearances for the Bavarians and 117 for the Old Lady. He ran into issues in his last season at the Allianz Arena, and Thomas Tuchel did not always count on him. He could make his first start for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday (September 1).

Lothar Matthaus was furious with Bayern's decision to sell De Ligt because he argued that the Dutchman was a much-needed leader in Munich. The Germany icon wrote for Sky Germany:

"Matthijs de Ligt was sold, even though he was the most stable player over the last two years. He was the head of defence. Now Bayern are again looking for a successor to David Alaba. For me, it is a disgrace that this leader is missing."

De Ligt wasn't Bayern's captain, but he often showcased his leadership qualities at the back for the Bundesliga giants. He was once the youngest captain to start a UEFA Champions League game while at Ajax in 2019.

Manchester United have had their issues with leadership over the years but are signing warrior-like stars to rectify this. De Ligt joins the likes of Lisandro Martinez and fellow new signing Manuel Ugarte at Old Trafford.
