Explained: Why Jude Bellingham could be banned for England's Euro 2024 quarterfinal against Switzerland

England midfielder Jude Bellingham could reportedly be banned from the Three Lions' Euro 2024 quarterfinal clash against Switzerland. The 21-year-old's obscene gesture following his goal in the Round of 16 game against Slovakia has been noted by UEFA.

As per a report in A Bola (via Daily Mail), Bellingham has thrown himself into hot waters with UEFA following his offensive gesture. The video has gone viral on social, and could even lead to a ban.

However, the Englishman later claimed that it was an inside joke with his teammates on the bench and not aimed at Slovakian players. Bellingham posted on social media to clear the air:

"An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight."

Jude Bellingham scored in the final seconds of injury time to force extra time in England's Round of 16 clash against Slovakia after Ivan Schranz's goal in the 25th minute of the game. Harry Kane managed to score early into extra time and sealed the win for the Three Lions, setting up a clash with Switzerland in the quarterfinal.

Jude Bellingham upbeat after England's win over Slovakia

Jude Bellingham admitted that the players were surrounded by negative energy following their draws against Denmark and Slovenia. However, he was delighted to have picked up the win over Slovakia.

"Good win, through to the next round and very happy. It's been tough the last week or so to try and keep the negative energy outside of the camp. I think today they would have been ready for us, I'm sure you have some questions scribbled down on that piece of the paper there. We showed that kind of character that England has missed especially in the times of before, we showed it today and was really important for us to get through," Bellingham told ITV (via AllFootball).
"You try and find all different edges at this level of football because it's so difficult to score goals. Every team plays to defend and keep it zero so any chance you get to maximise a situation like a throw-in you have to take it and we did. Depends how we look in two weeks. If it [his goal] ends up being one that helps the team lift the cup then it is right up there. I know what I can deliver in those moments regardless of what people say. I have done it this year for Madrid and done it with England before, I am just happy to help the team," he added.

Jude Bellingham has scored twice at EURO 2024 – the winner in the opening game against Serbia and then the equalizer against Slovakia in last 16.
