FA make decision regarding Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes' ban after his red card against Spurs
The Football Association has decided to overturn the red card handed to Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in the side's 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. The Portuguese midfielder received his marching orders for a tackle he made on Spurs midfielder James Maddison in the first half of the fixture.
The 30-year-old, looking to make a tackle, slipped and ended up hitting Maddison with his shin right below the knee. On-field referee Chris Kavanagh adjudged that the attempt constituted serious foul play, giving him a straight red card.
Controversy surrounded the decision, with fans questioning the decision as Fernandes slipped in the build-up to the tackle.
Fernandes was in line to miss Manchester United's next three clashes against Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham United. However, the side's successful appeal now means he will be available for selection.
It has been a difficult start for both the midfielder and the Red Devils in the 2024-25 campaign. With just two wins from their first six games, the side find themselves in 13th in the Premier League, while Fernandes has notched no goals and just one assist in that period. Erik ten Hag will be hoping that the midfielder will pick up form as they hope to overturn their poor position.
Bruno Fernandes insists Manchester United will look to win against Porto
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes suggested that despite their poor recent form, the side will be looking to collect all three points against Porto in the Europa League. Speaking ahead of the fixture, he said (via the club's website):
"It's a side that always does really well in Europe, we have to be aware of that," Fernandes told MUTV.
"It's a team that has a great spirit, [are] improving a lot in the last few games, even if they lost the last game in the Europa League."
"It is a team that has been improving under their new manager. We expect a really difficult game there, but we go there to win because it’s everything that we have to think about."
The Red Devils haven't had an ideal start to their Europa League campaign. Erik ten Hag's men were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford by Dutch side FC Twente in a frustrating affair.
Manchester United will be hoping to put their troubles behind them and kick-start their campaign with a win over Porto, the highest-ranked team among their opponents.
