Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho linked with surprise Premier League return - Reports

According to Football Insider, former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could replace Sean Dyche at Everton. The Portuguese, currently in charge of Fenerbahce, joined the Turkish giants this summer.

Mourinho first rose to prominence in football management after guiding Porto to a historic Champions League triumph in 2004. His achievements with the Portuguese giants earned him a move to Chelsea in the same year.

The self-proclaimed 'Special One' was a hit at Stamford Bridge and it was the start of a long and successful career with some of the top clubs in the continent, including Inter Milan and Real Madrid, and a second spell at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho also spent three seasons at Manchester United, winning the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season. However, as has been the recent trend, his tenure ended on a whimper in 2018.

Following mixed stints with Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma, the Portuguese arrived in Istanbul this summer for a fresh start. However, he could be back in the Premier League soon, this time on Merseyside.

Everton have endured a disappointing start to the new campaign, with one win and four defeats in their first six games in the Premier League. Dan Friedkin has agreed to buy current owner Farhad Moshiri's 94.1% stake in the club.

Sean Dyche could lose his job once the American business completes the takeover at Goodison Park. Friedkin apparently believes that the English manager isn't the right man to take the Toffees forward. Mourinho is among the candidates currently being considered as Dyche's replacement.

Interestingly, Friedkin, who also owns AS Roma, appointed the former Manchester United manager at the Stadio Olimpico in 2021. The Portuguese went on to win the UEFA Europa Conference League with the Italian giants in 2022 before getting sacked in January 2024.

Will Jose Mourinho be an option for Manchester United as well?

Manchester United could also be in the market for a new manager in the coming days. Erik ten Hag has struggled to impress despite investing a fortune in the squad over the summer.

The Red Devils have lost four of their 10 games across competitions this season, winning only three. New minority owners, INEOS will be monitoring the situation closely, with the team lacking identity under the Dutch manager.

However, even if Ten Hag is sacked, Mourinho's return to Old Trafford is unlikely. INEOS is building for the future, and Mourinho's recent record doesn't make him an enticing option. Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel, among others, have been linked with the United job so far.
