Former Chelsea target keen on replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United - Reports
Former Chelsea target Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly open to becoming the next Manchester United manager. The Red Devils are looking for their next coach and see the German as an ideal fit.
As per talkSPORT, Nagelsmann is keen on returning to club football and is ready to hold talks with Manchester United. The German manager was appointed as the national team manager by DFB until 2026 earlier this year.
Chelsea were interested in the German and held talks with the manager twice. They could not agree on terms in 2023 when the manager was sacked by Bayern Munich and in 2024 when they were looking for a Mauricio Pochettino replacement.
Manchester United have now shown interest after sacking Ten Hag. The Red Devils were struggling for results this season and lost to West Ham United on Sunday (October 27) at the London Stadium.
The Dutch manager was under pressure from last season, but managed to survive the sack after winning the FA Cup final. He was linked with an exit during the last two international breaks, but the Red Devils kept faith in the former Ajax manager.
The source also reports that there is interest in Xavi, and the club has been in talks with the Spaniard, who was sacked by Barcelona earlier this year. Brentford manager Thomas Frank is reported to be another name on the list, while Ruud van Nistelrooy takes charge at Old Trafford on an interim basis.
Manchester United legend not surprised at Erik ten Hag sacking
Paul Scholes was talking on talkSPORT earlier today and admitted that he was not surprised at the sacking of Erik ten Hag. The Manchester United legend claimed that it was a decision the club had to make in the summer and said:
"It's not a surprise, it probably should've been done in the summer. There have been some highs, you have to give him a small amount of credit for that. Winning the League Cup and FA Cup but I think there have been far too many lows in his reign."
Scholes went on to claim that the results last season were not good enough as well. He added that the 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in May should have been the end of the manager at the club and said:
"When you look at some of the damning defeats, I think Liverpool 7-0, City scored a lot of goals against them. A couple this season, the Liverpool and Tottenham games were difficult to stomach."
"But the most difficult one was at the end of last season at Crystal Palace. They got beaten 4-0. You don't like to ask for managers to be sacked but that night just felt like the end. Then he wins the FA Cup and it gives him hope but now they're 14th in the Premier League."
Apart from Julian Nagelsmann, Manchester United have also been linked with Ruben Amorim (via The Athletic). They report that the manager has a €10 million release clause and the Red Devils are open to paying it.
