Gary Neville explains his theory after Jamie Carragher asks him 'why did Manchester United not employ Arne Slot?'

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville explained his rationale when asked why the Red Devils did not appoint now-Liverpool manager Arne Slot as their head coach this summer. The Reds appointed the former Feyenoord manager to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the club's helm.

Several managers, including former player Xabi Alonso, were initially linked with Liverpool. However, the Reds opted for Slot, who has had a tremendous start to his stint on English shores.

Following a rather underwhelming season, United were also reportedly keen on offloading Erik ten Hag. However, odds shifted in the Dutchman's favour after the Red Devils defeated Manchester City 2-1 to lift the FA Cup.

Interestingly, several managers, including Thomas Tuchel and Zinedine Zidane, were linked with a move to Old Trafford. While speaking on Stick to Football, Jamie Carragher asked the former Manchester United icon why the Red Devils didn't make a move for Arne Slot.

Here's what Neville said:

"I think maybe they would’ve looked at Arne Slot. I haven’t got a clue, but they may have looked at him and thought can we really get rid of a guy who has two trophies in two years who hasn’t been backed by a proper structure to bring another Dutch manager in who’s basically got to start again."

Liverpool take on Nottingham Forest on September 14 in their first assignment after the international break.

Manchester United drop down to 14th on the PL table ahead of the international break

The Red Devils managed a slim 1-0 victory over Fulham in their first game of the new Premier League season. A goal by debutant Joshua Zirkzee sealed the game for the red side of Manchester.

However, Erik ten Hag's side lost 1-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion before losing 0-3 to Liverpool at home on September 1, Sunday.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro came under heavy criticism after his two faults allowed Liverpool to score two of their three goals. United have won only one of their last 13 league games against the Merseyside club.

As a result, The Red Devils slumped to the 14th position on the Premier League table ahead of the international break. United will be hoping to return to winning ways when they take on Southampton on September 14.
