“He has been anything but - and United have suffered” - Troy Deeney names Manchester United star as most disappointing player this season
Former Watford striker Troy Deeney has pointed out how Casemiro's poor form has made Manchester United suffer this season. He pointed out that the Brazilian has lost this athleticism but also failed to apply his experience.
Casemiro clearly doesn't have the legs on him anymore and has suffered to adapt to the Premier League's pace as a result this season. However, Deeney thinks that the Brazilian could have done a better job of using his experience. He said (via The Boot Room):
"Casemiro, I never expected him to havr the legs or to run around everywhere, or to be the best defensive midfielder in the world."
Deeney added:
"What I did expect was for him to use his vast experience and know-how at Manchester United to get them through tough times and be a consistent presence. He has been anything but- and United have suffered massively as a result."
Casemiro, in his first season (2022-23) at Old Trafford, was one of the main reasons behind the Red Devils finishing in the Premier League's top four. He also helped the team win the Carabao Cup.
However, he hasn't looked like his usual self this season. While he has often been forced to play out of position as a centre-back recently, Casemiro has clearly lost a step in his game.
Casemiro reacts to playing as a centre-back for Manchester United
Casemiro has reacted to him playing as a centre-back for Manchester United this season. The Brazilian said he has rarely played in that position previously but he tries to adapt to his best.
Injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Willy Kamwala, and Raphael Varane has seen him partner with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans as a centre-back. Reflecting on his role this season, the Brazilian said (via United's official website):
"I mean I've probably done it two or three times, in my time at Real Madrid, playing centre-half. But everyone knows that I am a central midfielder. It's not a role I like to do but, you know what, I do it with the absolute best will in the world."
Casemiro further noted that as he is a central midfielder by trade, it has taken him a while to adapt to the new role. He is still learning about the position.
