"He can clearly still play at the level" - Chelsea urged to sign Harry Maguire by Manchester United legend
Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes Harry Maguire would be a great replacement for Thiago Silva at Chelsea. The pundit has advised the Blues to sign Maguire this summer.
Maguire has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford since Erik ten Hag's arrival. The Dutch boss has largely preferred Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof since his arrival in 2022.
Maguire was stripped of his captaincy as well before the 2023-24 campaign as his game time at Manchester United dwindled. Dwight Yorke believes Chelsea would be the perfect destination for the England international.
Veteran center-back Thiago Silva has departed Stamford Bridge this summer and Chelsea will be in the market to bolster their options. Yorke feels Maguire's best days aren't behind him yet and he has something to offer for the Blues.
Yorke said (via Metro):
"Maguire has shown that he is very capable of playing at the highest level still and elite clubs like Chelsea, who are trying to rebuild, might take a chance on Maguire."
"He can clearly still play at the level and a fresh start might just give him that injection to really perform again for another year or two at that top level. So you never know."
"I played until I was 36 so I’m never going to write someone off if they’re still in their early 30s. He’s still got the attributes to do that."
Yorke also highlighted that Maguire can add experience to a young Blues' back-line. He said:
"I think players do improve if the team is doing well and winning football matches, football becomes very easy to play. Football is only difficult when things are not going particularly well and then you realise who is really good and who isn’t."
"With Thiago Silva leaving Chelsea, there’s a gap there for an experienced player like Maguire to move into."
Of the six signings they've made this summer, the Blues have signed one center-back, Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham on a free transfer.
Manchester United eyeing move for former Chelsea star this summer - Reports
Manchester United are interested in signing former Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso this summer, according to reports. The Red Devils have had problems at left-back and could be looking to strengthen that position.
Erik ten Hag's preferred starter for the position, Luke Shaw, missed the majority of the 2023-24 campaign through injury. The England international recovered and returned to the pitch only at the 2024 European Championships.
In his stead, the likes of Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot were deployed at left-back. According to The Mirror, Manchester United are considering a move for Alonso, whose contract with Barcelona expired in June.
Alonso spent six seasons at Stamford Bridge before moving to Barcelona in 2022. He won the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup, amongst other trophies with the Blues.
