"He has done an excellent job at Sporting" - Ex-Manchester United star backs Ruben Amorim to succeed at Old Trafford
Former Manchester United forward Nani has backed former teammate Ruben Amorim to enjoy a successful term at the Premier League side. The Sporting CP manager has been announced as the next manager of the Red Devils and will take over after the next international break.
Ruben Amorim was in charge of Sporting as they romped to a 5-1 win over Estrela da Amadora for their 10th win in the Primeira Liga season in 10 games. The opposition had a familiar face, as ex-Portugal international Nani featured for the away side in the game.
Nani shared a warm embrace with Amorim after the game before speaking to Sport TV about his former teammate's chances of succeeding at Old Trafford. He wished him the best of luck, pointing out that he will have quality players at Manchester United.
“All I can say is good luck. He has done an excellent job at Sporting, and I hope he can do the same at United, which is a great club, one of the best clubs in the world.
“I think he is in a great place. He will have the chance with excellent players to deliver a strong response, as he has all the conditions to do so.”
Ruben Amorim and Nani played together in the colors of Portugal across two World Cups between 2010 and 2014. The 39-year-old will officially become the Manchester United manager on November 11, after this month's international break.
Manchester United paid over the €10 million release clause to get Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese manager will have enough time to observe his new side, with Ruud van Nistelrooy set to remain in interim charge until his arrival.
Ruben Amorim rules out signing any Sporting stars at Manchester United
Incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that he does not intend to sign any Sporting CP players for his new side in January. The Red Devils have been linked with a number of players from the Portuguese champions in recent days.
Amorim's Sporting CP have been imperious in the league this season, with 10 wins from 10 games and 35 goals scored. They won 5-1 against Estrela da Amadora on Friday, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring four times, but Amorim quickly quelled any talks of signing the Swede after the game.
"I'm not going to come for any Sporting player in January".
"These years at Sporting have been the best years of my life and I won't forget that".
Ruben Amorim has his work cut out at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. They have drawn all three of their games in the UEFA Europa League as well.
