"He is hungry to learn and humble" - Arsenal star praises Riccardo Calafiori as he completes switch to the PL side
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has praised Riccardo Calafiori after the defender completed a switch from Bologna. Calafiori drew eyeballs with his performances for Bologna last season, helping the Serie A club secure a Champions League qualification.
The 22-year-old was also a mainstay in Italy's Euro 2024 and even bagged an assist in the final group game against Croatia. He missed the Round of 16 loss against Switzerland due to suspension.
Jorginho has now reflected on his international teammate's transfer to north London. Speaking about Calafiori's transfer, the veteran midfielder said (via Arsenal's official website):
"It's a really good signing. He's a really good young player that will give a lot to the team. He's a very professional guy, he is hungry to learn and humble. He has a lot to add and grow and learn and I think it's going to be a good connection."
Arsenal already have a solid defensive unit at their disposal. William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, and Jakub Kiwior are on the team and now Calafiori has joined.
Calfiori can play centrally as well as a left-back, meaning Mikel Arteta will have several options to work with next season.
Arsenal's new signing Riccardo Calafiori's eye-catching statistic
Riccardo Calafiori is one of the best passers when it comes to defenders. During the 2023-24 season, he racked up an impressive stat, providing five assists for Bologna, the most by any defender in Europe's top five leagues.
He completed a total of 1,783 passes with an 89.8% accuracy. Apart from that, Calafiori also completed 76 long balls and created 17 goalscoring chances last season.
Calafiori's attributes were also on display during Euro 2024. He is only 22 and seemingly has a high ceiling, meaning Arsenal have signed a really promising defensive talent. Fans will keep a keen eye on how his career unfolds.
