"He doesn't like to lose anything" - Lionel Messi's former teammate on Inter Miami star ahead of 2025 Club World Cup

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi's former teammate Sergio Aguero has spoken about what to expect from the legendary forward at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament is expected to be one of the Argentine maestro's last tournaments at the tail end of his iconic career.

Messi is widely believed to be the greatest player in the sport's history. The Argentine forward has won eight Ballon d'Or awards, the most in the history of the sport.

Aguero believes he will be one of the star attractions at the tournament, telling GOAL:

“We know that Messi is one of the players that everyone wants to see, so it'll be very nice to see Inter Miami compete at the tournament, especially with Leo in the team. He’s going to want to give his all as he doesn't like to lose anything."
“Opponents will need to be wary even if there’s only a minute of two left on the clock, as he’s capable of punishing you with one of his thunderous strikes, precision-guided free-kicks or just a delightful bit of play out of the blue. And that’s because he’s the best player in the world," he added.

Inter Miami will hope Lionel Messi can help them to a memorable run at the Club World Cup. The Miami-based franchise will make their debut in the tournament after winning the Supporters Shield last season.

"It’s not just because of the eight Ballon d’Or awards he’s won, but because of everything else" - Argentine star discusses why Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is the best player in history

Argentine legend Angel Di Maria has discussed why Lionel Messi, the star of Inter Miami, is the greatest player in the sport's history. The Argentine superstar has helped his nation win three consecutive international titles, two Copa America titles, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Di Maria, who has played 8655 minutes across 141 games for Argentina and Paris Saint-Germain, saw him combine with the legend for 16 goals. In comments made to Juan Pablo Varsky on Clank via GOAL, the Argentine said:

“I’ve always said the same thing - they are the two best in history. But it’s obvious that the best, by far, is Leo. It’s not just because of the eight Ballon d’Or awards he’s won, but because of everything else. Cristiano is about work, work and work. But Messi, he’s pure talent, a gift from God. He doesn’t need to do anything extra to be the best.”

Di Maria concluded, saying:

“Cristiano had to train hard, spend hours in the gym, perfect his finishing, and always push himself. But Leo, it’s like he’s just playing with friends. That’s why the difference between them is so big. Leo is unmatched.”

Lionel Messi is currently in the twilight of a legendary career that saw him win every prize in football. He has played for MLS outfit Inter Miami since the summer of 2023 and has become the record goal scorer of the team with 34 goals in 39 games.
