"He was the missing link" – Paul Merson says he is baffled by Arsenal not launching move to sign 25-year-old Premier League star
Arsenal icon Paul Merson has expressed his shock over the Gunners not roping in Newcastle United attacker Alexander Isak earlier this summer.
Isak, who was allegedly linked with both Arsenal and Chelsea earlier this year, has established himself as one of the best number nine options in the world of late. He relished a stellar 2023-24 season, contributing 25 goals and two assists in 40 total matches for his club.
The former Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad striker endured a tough start to the ongoing campaign. However, he has regained his usual form of late as he has registered four goals and an assist in his last four matches across competitions for Eddie Howe's outfit.
Speaking recently to Sky Sports, Merson claimed that he is a huge admirer of Isak and hinted that the Swede could fit in well at Mikel Arteta's side. He said (h/t Tribal Football):
"I'm a big fan of this lad. I'm surprised Arsenal didn't try to break the bank for him at the start of the season. I think he was the missing link for them. He can do everything, he can come short, get in the box, he can spread the game."
Merson, who represented the Gunners 401 times as a player, added:
"That's what you need at Arsenal, so you can get people like [Martin] Odegaard and [Bukayo] Saka on the ball. At the moment, they are a bit congested and haven't got that running behind player who's going to stretch the game. I'm a big fan of Isak, really big fan."
Isak, who has a deal until 2028 at Newcastle, will next be in action in the Magpies' home league clash against West Ham United on November 25.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta opines on title race
Earlier this Sunday, the Gunners were held to a 1-1 Premier League draw at rivals Chelsea. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring from close range in the 60th minute before Pedro Neto levelled things 10 minutes later.
After the end of the encounter, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was asked to remark on his side being nine points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League table. He replied (h/t Tribal Football):
"There's nothing that we can do about that. What I'm praying is that after the international break we have the team fully physically equipped. That they are available and that they are fit, because, it's been a nightmare for eight weeks."
The Gunners are currently fourth with 19 points from 11 league games.
