"He's always going against defenders" - Juan Mata blown away by 'fantastic' Euro 2024 star Arsenal reportedly want to sign
Former Spain international Juan Mata has lavished praise on Arsenal target Nico Williams who enjoyed a stellar Euro 2024 campaign. The 22-year-old scored the opener for Luis de la Fuente's side, as they defeated England 2-1 in the final.
Williams has been widely linked with a host of top clubs across Europe, including Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta looking to bolster his attack. Juan Mata, who won one European Championship and FIFA World Cup each with Spain, has lauded Williams for his exploits.
Mata insisted that the Athletic Club attacker has been overshadowed by Lamine Yamal but he was the most dangerous player in the first half against England. He hailed the fleet-footed winger for his incredible dribbling and ability to find the back of the net.
Speaking on the BBC One panel, the former Manchester United and Chelsea star said, as quoted by The Boot Room:
“Everyone, of course, is obviously focusing on Lamine these days, but Nico, it’s not only the goal but the finishing and everything that he provides. For me, in the first half, he was the most dangerous player for Spain, always getting into the position, one against one."
Mata added:
“He can go right, he can go left, he can finish. He is always going against defenders. He is fantastic.”
Williams enjoyed a fantastic season with Athletic Club last time out and helped the Basque Country club to clinch the Copa del Rey. The 22-year-old contributed with eight goals and 19 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
The Spaniard reportedly has a £50 million release clause in his deal which is pretty reasonable for a player of his potential and age. Arsenal have reportedly been tracking the 22-year-old for months now and will only be encouraged by his Euro 2024 showings.
Arsenal agree deal to complete their second signing of the summer: Reports
Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal with Ajax to sign England under-20 international Tommy Setford. As reported by transfer guru David Ornstein, the 18-year-old is set to become the Gunners' second summer signing following David Raya.
Raya was on loan at the Emirates last season from Brentford and saw his buy option activated. Setford, who is also a keeper and came through Ajax's youth ranks, is set to become their second signing of the summer.
Setford has made 15 appearances for Ajax's under-18 side so far and has kept six clean sheets. As per Ornstein, the Dutch giants rejected Arsenal's opening offer for the youngster but have now accepted an offer worth €1 million plus add-ons.
