"He’s the best player you can watch" - Portugal star reveals he told club teammates to study Cristiano Ronaldo's attacking prowess
Portugal defender Cedric Soares has said that he used to tell his former Arsenal teammates to study films of Cristiano Ronaldo to improve their skills up front. Soares plays together with Ronaldo for the Selecao.
Ronaldo, 39, is fresh off a record-breaking season with Al-Nassr, rewriting the Saudi Pro League record books with a 35-goal campaign to help his side finish behind runaway champions Al-Hilal.
Widely regarded as one of the best players to have graced the game, Ronaldo is still going strong. Ahead of the European Championship in Germany next month, Soares - who is leaving Arsenal after nearly four years - recalled telling his attacking teammates to learn from Ronaldo, especially his timings.
"Cristiano is a very complete player," he told the 1Para1 podcast (via GOAL). "One-on-one, he’s very good, he can dribble, and almost always shoots on target. You really need a lot, a lot of quality for that.
"I often talk to my teammates and say, 'Study Cristiano. When attacking the box, he’s the best player you can watch.' His timings are fantastic. He has that."
Soares, 32, has made 34 appearances for Portugal, contributing a goal and an assist.
How has Cristiano Ronaldo fared for Portugal?
Cristiano Ronaldo has a stellar record for Portugal. He has 128 goals in 206 games for the Euro 2016 champions, both being record tallies in men's international football.
Since his debut in a 1-0 home win over Kazakhstan in a friendly in 2003, Ronaldo is still going strong and has shown little signs of stopping anytime soon. His record tally compries 14 goals in 25 games at the Euros and 41 in 44 games in Euro qualifying, both being record tallies.
Ronaldo is the only player in Euro history to play five different European Championships and also score in each one. He's looking to extend that record at the upcoming edition in Germany as Portugal look to add to their 2016 title.
