“He’s a genius” - Czech coach offers opinion on Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal captain fails to score in Euro 2024 opening game win

Czech Republic coach Ivan Hasek has termed Cristiano Ronaldo a genius after Portugal's 2-1 win in the Euro 2024 Group F clash on Tuesday, May 18. The Real Madrid legend showcased his smart movement on multiple occasions to earn himself an extra yard of space. He managed three shots on target and also hit the woodwork with a header on one occasion.

While Diogo Jota found the back of the net from the rebound of Ronaldo's header, the Al-Nassr superstar was adjudged offside. Following the game, Hasek lauded Ronaldo's ability to find pockets of space in tight areas, saying (via GOAL):

"We played against one of the best teams in the world and I was very angry about conceding a goal so close to the end. Ronaldo is incredible that, at his age, he continues to play like this."
"He's a genius. The way he is able to shoot at goal in a short space is incredible. He's one of the best players of all time, without a doubt," he added.

Cristiano Ronaldo also showcased his creative ability during the game, setting up Vitinha with an outrageous backheel on one occasion. Portugal won the game 2-1, having gone behind in the 62nd minute through Lukas Provod's spectacular long-ranger.

An own goal from Robin Hranac (69') restored parity before Francisco Cenceicao scored the winner in injury time (90+2').

Portugal defender Diogo Dalot backs Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal defender Diogo Dalot has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo looks sharp. both physically and mentally. He is hopeful that Portugal will continue benefiting from their legendary captain.

Speaking to the media after the game in Leipzig, Dalot said (via Mirror):

"Cristiano is very well, very concentrated. He's very well physically and he's there always ready to score goals and we hope that in the next match it continues like this."

Portugal return to action on Saturday, June 22, to play Turkey, who currently lead Group F after beating Georgia 3-1.
