“He’s doing well and things are working out” - Barcelona chief Deco heaps praises on rejuvenated 27-year-old star
Barcelona sporting director Deco recently spoke highly of their 27-year-old forward Raphinha. The Brazilian has been in impressive form this season, contributing 16 goals and 10 assists in 21 outings for La Blaugrana across competitions.
Raphinha joined Barcelona from Leeds United in the summer of 2022 for a reported £55 million. Under former coach Xavi's tutelage, the attacker was often substituted off quickly, despite maintaining a decent form. After Hansi Flick's arrival this season, Raphinha has been a prominent starter for Barca and maintained a consistent good form. The Brazil international notably scored a hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on October 23.
Speaking to the media this week at a charity match, Barca sporting director Deco admitted being happy with Raphinha's form this season. He said (via MARCA):
"In his first season, when Barça won the league, he was fundamental. He scored many goals, provided assists, and is one of the players who has played the most... but in the end, when things don't go well, things, on an individual level, aren't valued too much. This year, the team started well, he's doing well and things are working out."
In 108 overall appearances for the Catalan side, Raphinha has recorded 36 goals and 35 assists across competitions for La Blaugrana. He is also the second-highest goalscorer in LaLiga with 11 goals this season, second only to his teammate Robert Lewandowski (15 goals).
"We need Rapha" - Barcelona coach Hansi Flick confirms that he cannot afford to rest Raphinha
In an interview with reporters ahead of Barcelona's LaLiga clash against Real Betis on December 7, Hansi Flick made it clear that Raphinha will always play if he is available. He said (via beIN Sports):
"We need Rapha. When he is available, he will play. If he's ready for 90 minutes, then he'll play 90 minutes. So is Lewandowski, who will also play tomorrow."
Barcelona currently sit atop the LaLiga table with 37 points off 16 games. In November, La Blaugrana failed to win three consecutive league games. They lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad, drew 2-2 with Celta Vigo, and lost 2-1 against Las Palmas. However, Flick's side returned to winning ways with a 5-1 victory over Mallorca on December 3.
Barca will be desperate to secure three points against Real Betis on Saturday to continue to hold their position as table leaders. Their arch-rivals Real Madrid are four points behind them with one game in hand.
