“He showed his character and worth” - Portugal coach lavishes praise on Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammate after win against Czech Republic
Portugal boss Roberto Martinez praised Cristiano Ronaldo's national teammate Francisco Conceicao after their win over the Czech Republic. The Selecao beat the Czech 2-1 in their Euro 2024 opener on Tuesday, June 18.
The Portuguese were put under serious pressure as they needed to produce a late comeback to emerge victorious. The Czech Republic took the lead through a wonderful finish from Lukas Provod in the 62nd minute.
However, Martinez's side managed to equalize thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Robin Hranac in the 69th minute. Eventually, it was 21-year-old attacker Conceicao who earned Portugal all three points on the night in stoppage time (90+2').
He found himself in the right place at the right time to score from close range in what was just his third appearance for Portugal across competitions. After the match, Martinez said (via BBC Sport):
"Francisco is the ultimate example of earning it. He deserves to be here and showed he is ready to help the group. He showed character and showed his worth because he was allowed to be here."
After registering a win in their tournament opener, Portugal are second in Group F, only behind Turkey on goal difference. The 2016 champions will next face the Turks on Saturday, June 22.
Alan Shearer praises Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal teammate Francisco Conceicao after late contribution in win over the Czech Republic
Cristiano Ronaldo's teammate Francisco Conceicao also received praise from Premier League legend Alan Shearer following his contributions to Portugal's win over the Czechs.
The youngster, who primarily plays on the flanks, may find it hard to get into the first team. But he has proven that he can make an impact off the bench. After the game, Shearer told BBC One (via BBC Sport):
"You are sent on to change the game and do something. You have to make an impact as a sub."
Conceicao was brought on for midfielder Vitinha in the 90th minute and almost immediately made an impact. With the likes of Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao in wide positions, it's unlikely that Conceicao will be picked to start ahead of the aforementioned names.
Moreover, Portugal can also turn to the likes of Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto to take up positions on the flanks.
