“Him scoring goals is a distraction from what he is meant to do” – Ferdinand and co-host make bold claim on Manchester United’s Scott McTominay
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was critical of midfielder Scott McTominay's performance in their win over Sheffield United on October 21. On his Vibe with Five podcast on YouTube, Ferdinand, along with co-host Stephen Howson demanded more from the Scotland international. Howson said:
“This is like when you have defenders that score goals. His primary functions is to make interceptions and to stop passes. Stop the oppositions from scoring goals."
He added:
“Him scoring goals is a distraction from what he is meant to do as a footballer. He made only 8 passes in the game. There was no control in the game.”
Adding to that, Ferdinand spoke about the criticism McTominay and center-back Harry Maguire have received from Manchester United fans, saying:
"But that is a given right, like we shouldn't be applauding for something which is a standard, I mean if they are put in the team then they should be performing."
He added:
"Scott McTominay scored a couple of goals and won the 3 points that is good. Both of these players have faced ridicule from fans, so both of them have showed strong character to come and play well but we need to see that on a consistent basis.”
The 26-year-old got on the scoresheet once again with an awkward strike to give the Red Devils the lead against the Blades as they won 2-1. This comes after his sensational brace off the bench against Brentford that turned the game late in favor of Erik ten Hag's side.
Manchester United star 'expressing regret' over move to Old Trafford
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro is unhappy with his move to the club, according to Catalan outlet El Nacional. The report claims that the Brazilian is worried about the instability at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old completed a sensational move to the Premier League after United spent €80 million to sign him from Real Madrid last summer.
El Nacional further claim that the club are also unhappy with the midfielder's performances this season, after a stellar campaign last time out. Casemiro was instrumental as the Red Devils won the Carabao Cup while also finishing in the top four and reaching the final of the FA Cup.
However, the midfielder has struggled this season, especially in the defensive aspect of his game.
Manchester United have already targetted his replacement, with the report claiming that they have shown interest in Benfica's Joao Neves. The 19-year-old stepped into a starting role for the Portuguese side after Enzo Fernandez's departure last season. He has caught the eye of Manchester United and other top European clubs.
