How many penalties has Cristiano Ronaldo missed in his career? Slovenia clash at Euro 2024 adds to overall tally
Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's EURO 2024 goal drought continued as he missed a penalty against Slovenia in the Round of 16. Prior to the game, the Al-Nassr forward had gone goalless in the group stage of a major tournament for the first time ever.
With the game tied at 0-0 in the 104th minute, Diogo Jota was hacked down by Slovenian defender Vanja Drkusic. The referee promptly pointed to the spot, and the 39-year-old stepped up to take the responsibility.
Unfortunately for Ronaldo, opposition goalkeeper Jan Oblak dived low to his left and kept his spot-kick out. At the end of the first period of extra time, he was seen in tears and being consoled by his teammates.
It was the 30th time he had missed a penalty in his career. His 164 successful spot-kicks out of 194 attempts puts his overall conversion rate at 84.5%, which is better than the likes of Neymar, Thomas Muller and Lionel Messi.
Cristiano Ronaldo converts penalty in shootout as Portugal progress
The game ended 0-0. Ronaldo was given a chance to redeem himself after shotstopper Diogo Costa saved the opening penalty of the shootout from Slovenia midfielder Josip Ilicic. The ex-Real Madrid attacker scored Portugal's first penalty to give them the all-important lead, becoming the first player to score in three penalty shootouts in the competition's history.
Costa went on to make two more saves. Roberto Martinez's side converted all three of their penalties to win the shootout 3-0.
After the game, Ronaldo's penalty record at the EUROs, including in shootouts, read five scored and two missed. His other penalty miss was in the 0-0 draw against Austria in the group stage of Portugal's victorious EURO 2016 campaign.
Hoping to repeat their success, they will now face 2018 FIFA World Cup champions France in the quarterfinals of the 2024 edition on July 5 at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion.
