“I have always done that” - Ex-Barcelona star says he’s ready to celebrate if he scores against Catalans this weekend

Former Barcelona star Marcos Alonso has claimed that he will celebrate if he scores a goal against his former side. The Spaniard, who now plays for LaLiga side Celta Vigo, will be facing off against the Catalan giants on the weekend.

Alonso moved to Camp Nou in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Chelsea. He scored thrice in 45 appearances for the Blaugrana, winning LaLiga and the Supercopa de Espana in the 2022-23 season.

He moved to Celta prior to the 2024-25 campaign and has been a regular starter for Os Celestes. Speaking about the prospect of facing off against his former side, Alonso said (via Barca Universal h/t Mundo Deportivo):

"A special match, especially because we are playing against the leader. We have already shown in previous matches, against important teams, that we can compete against anyone but we have not managed to get any good results."

In the 2023-24 campaign, Alonso fell out of the line-up due to injuries and found sparse playing time upon his return. When asked if he would be eager for some payback in the game, the 33-year-old said:

"Not at all. I don't need any revenge. Last year I didn't have any continuity and it's complicated, especially because of the injury. Now I'm enjoying football again, I'm very happy, and I'm really looking forward to the match."

Finally, when asked if he would celebrate against his former side if he was to score in the game, Alonso said:

"I have always done that when I have scored."

With 33 points (11 wins and two losses), Barcelona currently sit six points clear of Real Madrid atop the league standings. They are in red-hot form across competitions, with a whopping 55 goals scored and just 17 conceded in 17 games.

The Catalans will face off against Celta Vigo in their upcoming LaLiga fixture on Saturday, November 23.

Barcelona star in line to make return to starting XI for Celta Vigo clash - Reports

According to reports from Catalan radio station RAC1, Barcelona star Gavi is in line to make his return to Barcelona's starting lineup ahead of their game against Celta Vigo.

In September, the 20-year-old came back from an almost-year long hiatus due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. However, he has not been at full match fitness yet, having only featured off the bench thus far this season (six appearances).

According to RAC1, Gavi could make it into Hansi Flick's starting lineup for the game against Celta on the weekend but is unlikely to play the full 90 minutes. With a whole host of stars returning from international duty, the German tactician will also have to deal with the freshness and match sharpness of his squad carefully.
