“I am not ashamed” - Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim opens up on seeing a therapist during his playing days
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that he consulted a therapist during his playing career. The Portuguese took charge of the Red Devils on November 11, following Erik ten Hag's dismissal.
Amorim arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting with an impressive CV, having guided them to two league titles in four seasons. Amorim spent much of his playing career with Benfica and eventually retired in 2017. After earning his coaching degrees, he took charge of Casa Pia, Braga, and finally arrived at Sporting in 2020.
Speaking recently to the BBC, Amorim opened up on seeing a therapist to help him transition from a player to a coach.
"I am not ashamed to say I also had a therapist [as a player]. I think it helps a lot, because I was preparing for the need of my career, and I wanted to change different things about me to prepare for my career as a coach," said Amorim
Amorim's first game as the Manchester United boss was in the Premier League against Ipswich Town on November 24 at Portman Road. The Red Devils took the lead through Marcus Rashford, but the game ended 1-1.
The former Sporting manager's second game in charge was his first at Old Trafford as Manchester United defeated Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the Europa League. He is now preparing to face Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday, December 1, in the league.
Can Ruben Amorim unleash Rasmus Hojlund at Manchester United?
Manchester United have scored four goals in two games since Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford scored the first goal of the Amorim era, while Alejandro Garnacho continued his good form under the new head coach.
However, Red Devils fans will be extra pleased with Rasmus Hojlund, who scored twice against Bodo/Glimt in Europe. The Danish striker arrived at Old Trafford from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 for a reported £72m fee.
Hojlund enjoyed a decent debut campaign, scoring 16 goals in 43 games. However, he has been rather subdued this campaign, managing just four goals from 14 outings.
Amorim transformed Viktor Gyokeres from a relatively unknown face to one of the most feared strikers in the world at Sporting. The Swedish striker scored 66 goals from 68 games under the Portuguese manager. Manchester United will hope that Amorim can work his magic on Hojlund too.
