“I don’t think Ten Hag had the support he needed” - Peter Schmeichel offers opinion as Manchester United sack manager

Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Erik ten Hag did not get the necessary support at Manchester United. The legendary goalkeeper believes that the Dutchman was left to work on his own and did not get the players needed to take the club forward.

Speaking to the Premier League's official website, Schmeichel said Ten Hag did not get the right players at Manchester United. He added that the pressure was different from what the manager had at Ajax, saying:

"I don't think Erik ten Hag had the support he needed. He needed to be guided a little bit in what kind of players you need to bring in to Man United. I think he was left a little bit on his own, and that is not how modern-day football management works. I understand that, when you come in, you want to have control over the players you bring in. But we are not talking about Ajax."
"We are talking about Man United. You have to perform to a different level. This means you need different characters. Yes, you can have good dribblers. Technical, skilful players. But, mentally, are they strong enough? I've played with players who were not the best players in the world but they were 'Manchester United players," he added.

After months of speculation, the Red Devils parted ways with Erik ten Hag on Monday (October 28). The Dutchman finished his stint at Old Trafford with a Carabao Cup and an FA Cup win in just over two seasons.

Manchester United worse than when Erik ten Hag took over, claims Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes has slammed Erik ten Hag, opining that Manchester United are in a worse position than when the Dutchman took over. He claimed that there has been no improvement at the club and that he never felt like the Red Devils were doing better under the former Ajax manager.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Scholes said:

"No, I don't think so (in a better position than when he arrived), and that's the biggest thing. You want to see improvement but I don't think there's been any. If anything, they've got worse. When City first won the league you could feel there was something coming for a couple of years before, they were building. When Liverpool first won the league you could feel something coming under Jurgen Klopp. I've never felt something like that coming under Erik ten Hag."

Manchester United face Leicester City on Wednesday (October 30) in the Carabao Cup, followed by Chelsea in the league on Sunday (November 3). The Red Devils are 14th in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League table after a poor start to the season.
