“I felt like I needed a change in my football career" - Julian Alvarez explains decision to join Atletico from Manchester City

Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez has said that he decided to move to Atletico Madrid this summer, as he sought a 'change' in his career. The 24-year-old enjoyed two successful seasons at the Etihad but wasn't always the first-choice.

In 103 appearances across competitions, the 2024 Copa America winner contributed 36 goals and 18 assists while largely playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland. Nevertheless, he helped City to their first continental treble in his first season at the Etihad and played a key role in their Premier League four-peat last season.

However, shortly after his involvement at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Alvarez moved to the Wanda Metropolitano, where he has signed a six-year deal. Explaining his switch to Atletico in a reported €70 million move, Alvarez said (as per Football Espana):

“I spoke with my teammates and shared a room with Giuliano at the Olympics. El Cholo told me that he wanted me to come to help the team and that they were going to enhance my skills. It was a challenge for me.”

He added:

“I would like to play first of all in any position. As long as I am on the pitch and can help the team I will be happy. I felt like I needed a change in my football career, a new challenge.
"It is a club in which they give me the best tools to do so. Scaloni says that the players, as long as they play and have rhythm, we will have a place."

The former Manchester City foward is expected to make his Atletico debut at Villarreal on Monday (August 19).

Julian Alvarez was effusive in his praise for Manchester City players and officials as he announced his departure after two hugely successful years, winning six titles.

Alvarez - who also enjoyed success with Argentina during this period, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa America - said (as per the club's website):

“Today I say goodbye to this amazing club, with a lot of emotion. These have been two very special years. During this time, I have grown and learnt a lot - both as a player and as a person.
“To my teammates, thank you for every moment we have shared, for the effort and dedication in every training session and every match. I have learnt a lot from each and every one of you, and I remain with memories and friendships that will last forever."

He concluded:

“Manchester City will always have a special place in my heart. I wish you every success in the future, and I will keep on supporting the club wherever I may be.”

Julian Alvarez arrives at Atletico as a two-time Premier League and UEFA Champions League winner with Pep Guardiola's side, having also won the World Cup and Copa with Argentina.
