"I know how exciting the future is going to be here" - Joshua Zirkzee speaks out after completing switch to Manchester United
New Manchester United recruit Joshua Zirkzee has shared his initial thoughts following the completion of his transfer from Bologna to the Red Devils. The Dutch striker has become the first signing of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era at the club after completing his move for €42.5 million.
Netherlands international Zirkzee caught the eyes of Europe's top sides after an impressive season in Serie A with Bologna. Midway through the season, the 23-year-old was linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the transfer didn't occur at the time. The striker finished the season strongly, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 34 league games to lead his side to a place in the UEFA Champions League.
Manchester United made a move to sign the Dutchman this summer after a proposed move to AC Milan for him fell through. The Red Devils managed to secure his signature, and he shared his thoughts after he was unveiled as a new United player.
“Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club I know how exciting the future is going to be here and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United," Zirkzee said (via Fabrizio Romano).
“I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning," he added.
The striker joins the side on a deal until June 2029 with an option for another year and costs slightly over his €40 million release clause. Manchester United decided on the payment to avoid paying his entire release clause at once and will spread his fee over three years.
Joshua Zirkzee was named the Serie A U-23 Player of the Season in 2023-24 after starring for Bologna. The former Bayern Munich youngster featured twice for his country at Euro 2024 as they crashed out at the semi-final stage against England.
Manchester United director expresses pleasure at Joshua Zirkzee signing
Manchester United director Dan Ashworth has revealed that he is pleased with the club's early business of signing Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee. The Red Devils made the addition of a new striker a priority for them this summer, and they have managed to sign the Dutchman.
The former Newcastle United director oversaw the transfer of the highly-rated striker from Bologna for €42.5 million. Ashworth spoke about the transfer after Zirkzee's unveiling, saying that he believes he will add even more quality to their frontline.
“One of the main objectives this summer was to find a striker who would strengthen our already very successful attacking sector," Ashworth said (via Fabrizio Romano).
“We are delighted to have managed to sign a player of the caliber of Zirkzee so early in the transfer window," he added.
Joshua Zirkzee will replace Anthony Martial, who left the club after his contract expired on June 30. The two-cap Netherlands international will compete with Rasmus Hojlund for a starting berth in Erik ten Hag's side.
