What Pep Guardiola said about Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi
The 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony was marred by controversy as Real Madrid boycotted the event. Manchester City midfielder Rodri emerged as the winner and his club manager Pep Guardiola stated that it has been a long time coming. He said in a press conference:
"And I think Rodri represents perfectly, of course City because we are so proud, but Spanish football – their influence in world football in the last 10, 15 years, it has been massively important. Not just winning trophies, the way they play, the generations of managers, generations of players."
The manager also spoke about the dominance of Ronaldo and Messi, who won the accolade every year between 2008 and 2017.
"And Messi, nobody could beat him. Just Cristiano. Cristiano was a monster, and the father of the monster is Messi. And both have done something incredible in the last 15 or 20 years," he said.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been the subjects of fierce clashes over the years from fans siding with one or the other. The duo have attained unprecedented levels of success in the sport, dazzling fans across the globe for around 20 years.
