"I'm afraid Ruben Amorim will take him" – Benfica legend claims Manchester United will re-sign former player soon

Benfica great Alvaro Magalhaes has suggested that Manchester United will re-sign former Red Devils left-back Alvaro Carreras in the near future.

Carreras, 21, has cemented himself as one of the best full-backs in Portugal since initially joining Benfica on a loan move earlier this year. He has gone from strength to strength at the Primeira Liga giants of late.

After impressing during his loan stint at Benfica last season, Carreras permanently joined the Eagles for £5 million from Manchester United earlier this July. The wing-back has contributed two goals and as many assists in 17 appearances across all competitions this campaign.

During a recent interaction with Mirror, Magalhaes lavished praise on Carreras and claimed that the Spaniard could be on his way back to his former club. He said (h/t Tribal Football):

"I'm afraid Ruben Amorim will take him to Manchester United. It seems to me that he has the quality to be one of their first options, and looking at their squad, I believe with the new coaching staff, he could become an option again because the new coach knows him very well from what he saw at Benfica."

Magalhaes, who represented Benfica from 1981 and 1990, added:

"When he debuted in the league, I saw a brilliant left-back in him. The way he positioned himself, how he touched the ball. For many, doubts are only now starting to dissipate. I feel today that many people have long been undermining a high-performance athlete with potential for high achievement. At Benfica, only the best should play, and he is undoubtedly the best."

Carreras, who left Real Madrid to move to Manchester United in 2020, never made his senior debut for the Red Devils. He registered seven goals and 13 assists in 62 total age-group appearances for his former club.

Manchester United aiming to sign 20-year-old

According to Spanish website Fichajes.net, Manchester United are in pole position to sign Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande due to Ruben Amorim's arrival. They are set to face stiff competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United in the race to sign the centre-back.

Since leaving Midtjylland for over £6 million in January 2023, Diomande has made 69 appearances across competitions for Sporting. The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner has scored four goals for his current club.

Diomande, 20, allegedly has a release clause of around £67 million. He could pop up as a vital starter for United should he join them next summer.
