"I'm not going to lie" - England star admits EURO 2024 frustration and makes bold claims about his aim

England and Manchester City star Phil Foden has admitted that he is frustrated with his showings in Euro 2024 so far. While Gareth Southgate's side have made their way into the quarter-finals of the Euros, they have not been thoroughly impressive.

Foden enjoyed the best season of his career last time out in Manchester City colors and was named the Premier League Player of the Season. However, the 24-year-old has looked largely ineffective in England colors in Euro 2024.

Amid heavy criticism from fans and media regarding his showings for England, Phil Foden has admitted that he needs to do better. The versatile attacking midfielder has insisted that he aims to do the best he can in order to help the Three Lions.

Foden said, as quoted by Tribal Football:

“I've been a bit frustrated, I'm not going to lie. I want to try and score, try and do better things for England and at times it's not worked out but it's about keeping a good mentality."

The Manchester City star added:

“I've not been the best player in the Premier League to come here and not show it. I feel like every game I'm moving little steps forward and hopefully I can put in good performances for England, that's always been my aim.”

Foden has started all four games for Gareth Southgate's side in Euro 2024 so far but has struggled to replicate his Manchester City form. Southgate has deployed the 24-year-old on the left flank, from where he has struggled to make his mark.

The 24-year-old scored 27 goals and provided 12 assists in 53 games across competitions for Manchester City last season. Foden has won 38 caps for his country, having contributed four goals and eight assists.

Rio Ferdinand opens up on England's chances in Euro 2024

Rio Ferdinand has claimed that England could win Euro 2024 despite playing an unattractive brand of football. Gareth Southgate has come under a lot of criticism for his side's showings in the Euros despite his side making their way into the quarter-finals.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day ahead of the game, Rio Ferdinand defended Southgate as he said:

"They’ve qualified top of the group and they’ve won the first knock-out game and his [Southgate’s] substitutions have impacted games. Yes, like everyone else I want to see a better performing England, but they are getting the job done and they can win this tournament playing ugly."

The Three Lions will take on Switzerland in the quarter-finals at the Merkur Spiel Arena on Saturday, July 6.
