“I’m going to make 10 mistakes but I’ll try 11 times” - Liverpool attacker speaks after impressive 2024 Copa America display
Liverpool attacker Darwin Nunez has spoken after putting up an impressive display for Uruguay's 3-1 win against Panama in Copa America on Sunday (June 23). The 25-year-old striker, who has been under fire for his performances for the Reds, scored the second for his country in their last match.
Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Nunez made 54 appearances across competitions for the Merseysiders, bagging 18 goals and 13 assists. He found the net on just 11 occasions in the English top-flight.
Following his country's win in their first Copa America game this summer, Nunez said (via @AnfieldSector):
"I'm going to make 5 or 10 mistakes, but I'm going to try 11 times. You should never give up, otherwise nothing will ever come of it."
During the aforementioned match, Nunez took four shots throughout the contest, with three of those finding the target. He managed a 76% passing accuracy and made one key pass.
The Uruguayan attacker also attempted five dribbles, out of which he successfully completed two. He played two accurate long balls from his three attempts and missed two big chances.
Nunez won three of seven ground duels and managed to win all three aerial battles in this match. He will next be in action for his country when they face Bolivia in a group match on Thursday (June 27).
To date, the Liverpool man has made 24 appearances across competitions for Uruguay, bagging 12 goals and three assists.
Arne Slots sees Darwin Nunez as a key figure at Liverpool heading into the 2024/25 season - Reports
Despite overwhelming criticism regarding Darwin Nunez's performances for Liverpool, it is reported that the striker is seen as a key component of Arne Slot's team.
As per TeamTalk, the Dutch tactician will not look to move on from the Uruguay international this summer. Nunez came to Anfield in the summer of 2022 for a reported fee of £85 million.
Since moving to Merseyside, the striker has scored 33 goals and assisted 17 in 96 matches across competitions for Liverpool. Should things not go to plan, Slot always has the option of deploying either Diogo Jota or Cody Gakpo down the middle.
Currently, Nunez is contracted with his current employers till the summer of 2028 and even if the Reds wished to sell, they would be seeking a fairly large sum.
