“I had made my decision” - Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim brutally shuts down speculation linking him to West Ham United last summer
Incoming Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has stated that he never considered the move to West Ham United in the summer. He claims that there was a meeting, but it was not to negotiate a move to the London club.
Speaking to the media, Amorim stated that he had no plans to leave Sporting CP in the summer. The Portuguese tactician was in London for a meeting with West Ham executives in April 2024.
Amorim acknowledged that the trip to England took place amid interest from West Ham United, but the Manchester United head coach stated that his focus was always on the Portuguese club. He said:
"I went to England. I didn't go to negotiate, I went to meet the owner. I had made my decision. If you think I already wanted to leave last year, there's nothing I can do about it."
Ruben Amorim will take over at Manchester United on November 11. His first match will be against Ipswich Town on November 24 after the international break.
Ruben Amorim wanted to delay move to Manchester United
Ruben Amorim has admitted that he wanted to stay at Sporting CP until the end of the season. He claims that the decision was done but Manchester United gave him three days to decide if he wanted to move to Old Trafford now or not.
The Portuguese tactician added that he did not have the option of staying at Sporting until the end of the season. He said:
"The only thing I asked of Man United was to leave at the end of the season. I spent three days asking, it was what I wanted. They said it wasn't possible, I was told it was either now or never, so I had to make a decision. If I didn't accept, they would look for another option."
"So I had three days to make my mind up about a decision that changes my life radically. That's what I did. I've had other opportunities, the president can confirm this, this is not the first or second time that I have been requested by another team and I don't want another team. After Sporting I wanted that one: Man United."
Manchester United paid €11 million to Sporting CP – slightly over the release clause as they wanted to bring his coaching staff to Old Trafford as well. Amorim has been linked with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City in the past as well.
