“I said to the lads: ‘Guys are you seeing their faces?’” - Rodri on what he told Manchester City teammates about Real Madrid

Manchester City star Rodri has opened up about what he told his teammates about Real Madrid during the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League. The Cityzens won the tournament, beating Los Blancos 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-final before overcoming Inter Milan 1-0 in the final.

However, the Spain international warned his colleagues about the mentality the La Liga giants showed in their previous games. Against Liverpool in the Round of 16 first leg, Los Blancos fell two goals down within 15 minutes.

Nevertheless, Carlo Ancelotti's side remained calm as they recovered to win the tie 5-2 on the night and 6-2 on aggregate. Pointing out that display in particular, Rodri told BBC Sport (via @MadridXtra):

"I remember Real Madrid, they went against Liverpool, they were 2-0 down, and I saw their faces. ... I was like 'these guys are not worried'. I said to the lads, 'Guys are you seeing their faces?' They were like ' we will overcome this situation. Don't worry.'"

He added:

"This calm gives you experience. I couldn't explain. It's something you have to live, and when you win it, you know how tough it is."

Los Blancos are renowned for their Champions League pedigree, having won the competition a record 15 times, winning their latest title last season.

Carlo Ancelotti and Co. kickstart their title defence against VfB Stuttgart at the Santiago Bernabeu on September 17.

Madrid are said to be admirers of Manchester City holding midfielder Rodri, who's widely considered to be among the best in his position. With the departure of Toni Kroos this year, Los Blancos are looking to sign a deep-lying playmaker.

However, a move for the 28-year-old won't be cheap, as he's contracted with the Etihad outfit till 2027. Rodri is an integral component of the Cityzens' squad, having made 257 appearances across competitions, bagging 26 goals and 30 assists.

As per Spanish outlet AS (via Express), City are set to offer the midfielder a mega contract to make him one of the top earners at the club. The player has also said that he's happy in Manchester, which potentially rules out a move to Madrid in the near future.
